After 5 Events

"After 5" provides informal learning in a congenial group setting. Local personalities present programs in early evenings to encourage attendance by pre-retirees as well as retirees.

After 5 events are one OLLI activity that you do not need to be a member to attend. To register without being a member, please mail your registration form to the office. You can obtain a form using the Forms menu item above.

Introduction to Amish Quilt Gardens
Turner Senior Resource Center, 2401 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor

For the ninth year, the Indiana communities of Elkhart, Goshen, Bristol, Wakarusa, Nappanee, Middlebury, and Shipshewana will dazzle visitors with 19 quilt gardens. These giant gardens will feature 150,000 individual plants and celebrate the Heritage Trail in northern Indiana. In 2016, the gardens, additionally, will participate in the celebration of Indiana’s bicentennial. Learn the gardens’ history and stories of the quilt patterns reproduced, along with the influence of the Amish people who live in the area. Tour guide and quilter Mary Davis will share information that will have you planning a road trip to enjoy this delightful area. Learn about the future of automobiles from Dr. Huei Peng, Director of the University of Michigan’s Mobility Transformation Center (MTC). MTC is a new, public-private partnership focusing on research and development of connected and automated vehicles, including the M-City test facility. A tour is not possible, as M-City is heavily used by U-M faculty and staff, as well as MTC industry members. However, Dr. Peng will provide a presentation on current activities at this dynamic, one-of-a kind test facility for autonomous, or self-driven, cars.

Breeda’s decision to participate in The Moth was about the freedom and courage to say yes to opportunities that present themselves and the desire to share those experiences. She will incorporate stories about how she finds her
inspiration and how, as she aged, she developed the confidence and courage to seize the moment.

The Ann Arbor Distilling Company builds their spirits from scratch. Not every boutique distillery has the setup or the vision to start right from grain and manage the process all the way to your glass. After 5 will join Ari Sussman, co-founder of Ann Arbor Distilling Company, for a private tour and tasting of spirits and cocktails. Mr. Sussman will discuss the distilling process and the history of the company, and lead a tour of the historic Ann Arbor building that has been re-purposed for making spirits.
