OLLI Fall 2017 Kickoff
Campus of the Future: Higher Education That is Life-long and Life-wide Keynote address by Dr. Mika LaVaque-Manty, Director of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Michigan. Professor Mika LaVaque-Manty will describe recent trends and some of the exciting developments in higher education in general and at public research universities in particular. U-M is among the leaders of academic innovations that combine the university’s 200-year commitment on accessible, public, and democratic education. The “college experience” of the future may begin as early as middle school and involve periods of residential activity in classrooms and labs. Following the keynote there will be an opportunity to talk with OLLI staff and volunteers, to get information about and to register for OLLI's Fall 2017 lectures, study groups, day trips, and other events, and to learn more about volunteering for OLLI. Light refreshments will be provided. Originally from Finland, Dr. LaVaque-Manty received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. He is currently the Director of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Michigan as well as a Professor of Political Science since 2001. Dr. LaVaque-Manty's research interests include modem (seventeenth-century forward) and contemporary political theory. He was trained as a philosopher rather than a political scientist, allowing him to combine the tools of analytic political philosophy, textual interpretation, and attention to historical and sociological details. Dr. LaVaque-Manty is the author of "Playing the Fields of Eton: Equality and Excellence in Modern Meritocracy", which is newly published by the University of Michigan Press. He has also previously written a book entitled "Arguments and Fists: Political Action and Justification in Liberal Theory." In his free time, Dr. LaVaque-Manty enjoys outdoor activities like running and adventure racing. He also enjoys hiking, cooking, photography, endurance sports, and CrossFit.
