OLLI Fall 2017 Kick Off
Keynote address by Dr. Mika LaVaque-Manity, Director of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Michigan. Following the keynote there will be an opportunity to talk with OLLI staff and volunteers, to get information about and to register for OLLI's Fall 2017 lectures, study groups, day trips, and other events, and to learn more about volunteering for OLLI. Light refreshments will be provided. Originally from Finland, Dr. La VaqueManity received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. He is currently the Director of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Michigan as well as a Professor of Political Science since 2001. Dr. La Vaque-Manity's research interests include modem (seventeenth-century forward) and contemporary political theory. He was trained as a philosopher rather than a political scientist, allowing him to combine the tools of analytic political philosophy, textual interpretation, and attention to historical and sociological details. Dr. LaVaque-Manity is the author of "Playing the Fields of Eton: Equality and Excellence in Modern Meritocracy", which is newly published by the University of Michigan Press. He has also previously written a book entitled "Arguments and Fists: Political Action and Justification in Liberal Theory." In his free time, Dr. La Vaque-Manity enjoys outdoor activities like running and adventure racing. He also enjoys hiking, cooking, photography, endurance sports, and CrossFit.
