Weapons of Math Destruction
Former Barnard College professor Cathy O’Neil, examines the use of data in contemporary society with an emphasis on how mathematical models drive decision-making and policy creation. O’Neil offers riveting, real-life examples of “good intentions gone terribly wrong” to illustrate her points. Drawing from these examples, participants will discuss the assumptions underlying mathematical models, their inherent flaws, and their impact on peoples’ lives. This is NOT a math class! Please read the entire book prior to the first meeting. Laurel Park has a Ph.D. in Higher Education from U-M and worked in institutional research for eight years. Required text: O’Neil, Cathy. Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy. New York: Crown Publishers (2016).
