DLS - 9/12/17 Daypass - Exposing Fake News - But it is Not What You Think
A Knight Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, Ms. Hosea was a BBC correspondent for twelve years, one of the most trusted news organizations in the world with a worldwide audience of forty million people. Ms. Hosea spent almost three years based in the Middle East. She covered the Arab Spring from day one in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and the uprisings in Libya and Yemen. Ms. Hosea also covered the war in Gaza and the massacre of Muslim Brotherhood supporters. She mentions she respects her colleagues and the work they do, but even the BBC is not immune to political pressures. In the U.S., Ms. Hosea is making a film on access to clean water and environmental justice. As part of her film, she was at the Standing Rock Camp, where media workers faced felony charges for covering events. Ms. Hosea is also working in Flint and the Navajo Nation, where people’s water was contaminated. This presentation will provide insights based on her experience as a BBC correspondent on how certain subjects were covered, or not covered, and why.
