Flint: Recapturing Vehicle City
From the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, Flint was a leading manufacturer of carriages and later automobiles, earning it the nickname of “Vehicle City.” Join us on this bus tour which will recapture Flint’s progress in attaining this designation through visits of sites where first carriages, and then automobiles, were built and where, through the efforts of William C. Durant, the Buick Motor Company, Chevrolet, and General Motors were founded. Charles S. Mott, a manufacturer of bicycle wheels, who later transitioned to automobile wheels and axles, relocated his company to Flint, becoming an original partner in the creation of General Motors. Mott’s 65-acre estate in Flint is named “Applewood,” a natural choice because apples were a part of the Mott family heritage. Who has not sampled Mott apple juice? A more complete description will be available for the 2018 Winter/Spring Catalog. Registration for this event will open during January 2018.
