Picasso in Context
Arguably the most influential artist of the 20 century, Pablo Picasso did not create his art in a vacuum. Honoring the artists who preceded him and the artistic circles of which he was a part, Picasso changed the way Western artists understood and represented the world. This slide presentation will focus on the art of Picasso in terms of the multiple sources the shaped his art including his inner world, his culture and society, his artistic peers, and his audience. Picasso is quoted as saying: ‘My mother said to me, if you are a soldier you will become a general, if you are a monk, you will become a pope.’ “ Instead I was a painter and became, Picasso.” There will also be an associated UMMA tour! A reminder that no food or drink is allowed in UMMA's galleries. April 27 location is University of Michigan Museum of Art, Forum Entrance by the Gift Shop, 525 S. State St., Ann Arbor
