The Art Film
We will screen and discuss four significant international films from the mid-twentieth century that were in part a reaction to the recent world war and also an endeavor to transcend Hollywood’s traditional filmmaking. These films are sometimes called “art films” because of their stylistic innovations and the humanism that fills their images and narratives. The class will screen The Bicycle Thieves (Italy, 1948); Ugetsu (Japan, 1953); Winter Light (Sweden 1962); and Jules and Jim (France, 1962). Ira Konigsberg is Professor Emeritus of Film and Literature at the University of Michigan. For classes held at NCRC, there are multiple parking options. Parking passes for the structure can be purchased through the OLLI office and are $5 per day and can be purchased for all classes. Metered parking is available on a first-come first-served basis. You may also use the park-and-ride and free public transportation options. If you are interested in this option, please call the office (734-998-9351) and we will give you all the details.
