The Oedipus Plays of Sophocles
This study group will read aloud and discuss the three Theban plays of Sophocles. We will get to know something of the Sophoclean hero, who demonstrates, as Bernard Knox puts it, “that man’s keenest sight is blindness, his highest knowledge ignorance, his soaring confidence and hope an illusion.” We will watch The Gospel at Colonus and see excerpts from film treatments of Oedipus Rex and Antigone. The text is Robert Fagles’ The Three Theban Plays of Sophocles. Ms. Scott was a lecturer in classics and great books at UM and taught Latin and English literature at Community High School.
