A package of 4 Fall term After 5 events: September 12, 2018 -- Black and White Like You and Me Wednesday, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Kellogg Eye Center 1000 Wall St., Ann Arbor, MI Thomas “Whitey” Daniels and Thomas “Cookie” Marsh met playing Geezer basketball in Detroit, became friends, and founded the ‘Black and White’ Like You and Me’ movement in Detroit. Through real life stories designed to show us that Blacks and Whites are quite similar in many ways, we will be challenged to put aside ignorance that lies at the root of preconceptions and stereotypes. October 3, 2018 -- Detroit Tiny Homes Village: A Chance to Own Wednesday, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Kellogg Eye Center 1000 Wall St., Ann Arbor, MI Learn how one neighborhood in Detroit is part of an effort to make affordable housing available to people living below the poverty level. This talk will be given by Rev. Faith Fowler, Director, Cass Community Social Services. October 17, 2018 -- Following the Money in Michigan Politics Wednesday, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Kellogg Eye Center 1000 Wall St., Ann Arbor, MI Michigan elections are becoming increasingly expensive, and the upcoming 2018 election in Michigan could be one of the priciest in state history. Learn how the role of money in Michigan politics has changed over the last decade. This will be a fascinating presentation by Craig Mauger, Executive Director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network. November 14, 2018 -- Teaching in Michigan: It’s Complicated Wednesday, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Kellogg Eye Center 1000 Wall St., Ann Arbor, MI Teaching in Michigan: It’s Complicated. This presentation will discuss issues related to teacher recruitment, retention, and development. Additional topics will include teacher preparation, recruiting teachers of color, and equitable access to excellent educators. Daniel J. Quinn, Ph.D. is a project manager with Public Policy Associates, Inc. PPA is a Lansing-based public policy, research, and consulting firm. Previously, he served as executive director of the Great Lakes Center for Education Research and Practice and as an adjunct professor of education at the University of Louisville and Oakland University. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Mid-Western Educational Research Association.
