A Philosopher Looks at Our Political Crisis
In The Monarchy of Fear, author Martha Nussbaum, Professor of Law and Ethics in the Philosophy Department of the University of Chicago, writes that since the 2016 election the role of emotion in political opinion has been largely overlooked. In the U.S. and across Europe, the economic stress and rapid social changes affecting many lives have created a sense of powerlessness and a pervasive underlying fear of change. The result is resentment and blame directed at immigrants, Muslims, minority races, and the elite. We will read this book and talk about the ideas. Please read through p.16 for the first class. NO CLASS ON MARCH 4.
