Introduction to Astrophysics
This course is based on the series of 24 Great Courses lectures by Prof. Joshua Winn of Princeton University.* We will view and discuss two half-hour lectures each session. The course will cover such diverse topics as mapping the universe and learning about astronomical objects ranging from exoplanets to stars, neutron stars, black holes, and galaxies. We’ll discuss what makes stars shine and their ultimate fates as they use up their fuel, and observational techniques such as optical, infrared, and radio telescopes and “multi-messenger” gravitational wave detectors. A final session will be devoted to Q&A with UM astronomy professor Fred Adams. This course presents more equations than most Great Courses. However, the math is mainly algebra and Prof. Winn explains the concepts so well that it’s not necessary to follow the math in detail to get a good understanding of them. (For those who wish, the study group leader will spend extra time before or after each session to review the math.) Craig Stephan is a retired Ford Motor Company physicist and leader of previous OLLI courses including The Science of Climate Change, Cosmology, The Higgs boson, The Aging Brain, and Music and the Brain. *See www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/introduction-to-astrophysics.html No class: November 29, December 27
