Real Heroines: Women and Words, 1800-1930
If you think all those recent movie heroines were amazing, this study group will introduce you to some real heroines who did amazing feats with literacy in the Modern period (1880-1930). In those 50 years, the U.S. was in a profound state of transition; these women, including Jane Addams, Cora Wilson Stewart, Sarah Winnemucca, and Ida Tarbell worked in a variety of roles, using their literacy abilities as exemplars and sponsors of literacy to achieve major goals. Alice Horning is professor emerita of writing and rhetoric/linguistics at Oakland University; she has been studying and teaching about literacy for more than 30 years.
