The Myth of Phaedra: 3 Perspectives
Led by experienced teachers Marilyn Scott (Classics) and Gail Hubbard (French), this study group will see how one myth may be interpreted multiple ways. We will read and discuss Euripides’ tragedy Hippolytus (James Morwood’s Oxford Classics Translation), then Racine’s drama Phedre (Ted Hughes translation). Finally, we’ll watch the 1962 Phaedra, a modern re-telling starring Melina Mercouri and Tony Perkins. Please bring the specified translations to class.
