Medical EthicsThe pandemic has highlighted the importance of moral issues in medicine. This study group will explore some of the most compelling issues: the caregiver-patient relationship (patient autonomy and confidentiality); end-of-life treatment decisions; justice in the use of scarce resources; and timely ethical issues that have emerged during this pandemic. Discussion will often focus on concrete cases and may include break-out groups. Ethical theories and concepts will be introduced, but no background in philosophy is expected. Elias Baumgarten taught Medical Ethics at the University of Michigan-Dearborn for more than 35 years and has been a member of hospital ethics committees at Michigan Medicine since 1985.
