1619-Present -- 11/5/20 Daypass -- Racial Wealth Gaps: Historical Precedents and Present Consequences
Speaker: Dr. Trina R. Shanks, Professor, Director of Community Engagement, and Founding Director of the Center for Equitable Family & Community Well-Being (University of Michigan School of Social Work) Trina Shanks is Professor and Director of Community Engagement at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. She has a Ph.D. from Washington University and attended the Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Her research interests include the impact of poverty and wealth on child well-being; asset-building policy and practice across the life cycle; and community and economic development. She is national colead for the Social Work Grand Challenge: Reduce Extreme Economic Inequality. Speaker’s Synopsis: From forced chattel slavery and disparate land distribution via the Homestead Act to discriminatory practices and violent responses from vigilante groups and law enforcement, Blacks have frequently been shut out of opportunities to build and sustain wealth. Reviewing historical events and current trends, this talk will examine disparities in wealth by race. We will close with a discussion of the consequences of wealth inequality as well as potential solutions.
