Susan Rice -- A Remarkable Life and Career
We will read and discuss Tough Love: My Story of Things Worth Fighting For by Susan Rice. Her personal story begins with her great-grandfather, who was
born a slave and it unfolds through Susan, who grew up in privilege with an elite education, worked at the State Department in the Clinton administration
and rose to become UN Ambassador and National Security Advisor to President Obama. Early in life, she was taught tough love, which enabled her to compete
and excel as an African American woman in settings where people of color are few. Her parents said of themselves, “the only constraints we faced were our
ambitions.”
Ms. Rice provides an insider’s account of the complex international issues that confronted the United States during her decades of service, where she
encountered difficult diplomatic and political events such as the Rwandan genocide, the war in Syria and the Bengzi investigations. She relates previously
untold stories behind security challenges, as recent as the U.S. response to Russian election interference in 2016 and the “surreal transition” to the
Trump administration.
