Going for Baroque
The pun is old and often used but it makes for a good title: “GOING FOR BAROQUE”. The great triumvirate of composers during this musical period all
born in the year 1685, is Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti and we hear their music often. However, this time was particularly rich in composers. I would like to
spend some time looking at other giants of the Baroque as well as the works of these three titans. Such
composers as Frescobaldi, Dowland, Couperin, and Telemann deserve attention as they wrote some remarkably beautiful and forward looking music.
I plan to illustrate at the piano as well as show on line (or if we are back to real live performances by late spring, on a “boom box”) samples of
these composers. They are worthy of our attention and in many cases wrote astonishingly beautiful music.
