The First Amendment protects several basic liberties -freedom of religion, speech, press, petition, and assembly. Speaker will address some popular
misconceptions about the First Amendment- both the speech and religion clauses-and then examine some high profile disputes.
He is the Edson R. Sunderland Professor of Law. His main teaching interests are political., moral, legal, and social theory: constitutional interpretation:
torts and the First Amendment.
Professor Herzog holds an AB from Cornell University and PhD from Harvard University. He joined the Political Science Department at the University of
Michigan in 1983 and holds a joint appointment in that department and the Law
School. In 2011 Professor Herzog was selected by the U of M student body to receive its coveted Golden Apple. He is the first law professor to receive a
Golden Apple in the Award’s 20-year history.
