Art History IV: Early Medieval Art in the West
Following the enthusiastic reception of the three art history courses that I taught in Fall 2020 and Winter 2021, I am offering Art History IV, which continues the history of art and architecture with the courtly art of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires as well as the unrestrained exuberance of Hiberno-Saxon art in the British Isles and Scandinavian art of the 9th through 11th centuries. While the leading western cultures paid homage to ancient Rome when they created their architecture, sculpture, and book illumination, the most intriguing art produced beyond the reaches of Rome, Constantinople, and Aachen reveals the indigenous styles of the Scandinavian Norsemen’s as they invaded and ultimately settled in eastern Britain and Northern France. A goal of the course is to practice “close looking,” in order to understand the multiples meanings of the art. The course will interest learners who have traveled in western Europe and the eastern Mediterranean.
