Linguistic Justice
Despite many discussions of social justice issues, little attention is being paid to Linguistic Justice. This phrase refers to the ways bias and discrimination play out in spoken and written language. This course will offer brief readings on linguistic bias in the schools (cf. the Ann Arbor case from years ago), in language policy and planning (cf. English only), in the workplace and in housing, and open discussion of how linguistic justice might support key social justice goals. Alice Horning is retired from Oakland U where she taught writing and linguistics for more than 30 years.
