Surrender Without Defeat?: Nelson Mandela and the End of Apartheid in South Africa
This study group will examine what is sometimes called the “South African miracle,” the negotiation process that resulted, in the 1990s, in the emergence of a functioning multi-racial democracy in a nation that more than any other had long been seen as a virtual synonym for racial repression, domination, and violence. How did South Africa avoid the racial bloodbath that so many had expected? How and why did the white South African government essentially negotiate itself out of power? Could what happened in South Africa serve as a model for the resolution of other seemingly intractable global conflicts? Barry Shapiro is Professor Emeritus of History, Allegheny College.
