Southern Cuisine in the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive
The Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive encompasses thousands of documents illuminating the production, promotion, preparation, presentation, consumption, and appreciation of food and drink in America. This presentation will focus on materials from the American South and will offer an introduction to Southern Cuisine and its representation in print through published cookbooks of the 19th and 20th centuries, from Mary Randolph’s 1824 The Virginia House-Wife to Mary Jackson and Lelia Wishart’s 1971 The Integrated Cookbook. NOTE: Please be aware that this lecture includes some publications with racist images and text, which will be discussed within historical context.
