The Futurescape of Medicine: Current and Future Surgical Options for Hip and Knee Replacement
Hip and knee replacements are some of the most effective operations in medicine to rapidly improve the quality of life for patients. Hip replacement was called the operation of the century by the Lancet in 2007. The promise of joint replacement is great and progress has been made in the last 40 years but some caution is needed when faced with the wide range of options and claims being marketed to patients. Raised in the Midwest, my first degree was in engineering. This led to medical school at Boston University, an orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan and fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at Massachusetts General Hospital. An interest in evidence-based medicine and a frustration with the misinformation in medical marketing led me and my Co-Director to found and run the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative 10 years ago.
