The Benefits of Connecting in a Suspicious World
We will read and discuss the book, “The Power of Strangers” by Joe Keohane. As we've become increasingly isolated socially, politically and
economically we are losing attributes that support happiness, empathy and even cognitive functioning. The author draws ideas from a growing body of
research that shows even passing interactions with strangers can ease loneliness and provide a deepening sense of belonging. He gathered tips from
researchers and tried them out with strangers on the street and in other situations. The results were sometimes awkward or entertaining, but frequently
very satisfying.
Gerry Lapidus has lead OLLI book discussions since 2005. Classes are informal and conversational. He leads the first discussion and requests volunteers to
lead subsequent meetings while he serves as moderator. Please read Prolog, Chapt 1 and 2 for the first session.
