Challenging ShakespeareIn recent years, a growing faction of scholars and theater practitioners have argued that some of Shakespeare’s plays should no longer be performed because of their potential to do harm. In this study group, we’ll examine four of Shakespeare’s most “challenging” plays alongside adaptations that might challenge how we interpret them. This group will meet for eight weeks, reading a play or adaptation each week for discussion during class. (We'll discuss Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' our first week, if participants want to get a head start!) Rebecca (Becky) Hixon is a PhD student in English at UM where she studies Shakespeare, adaptation, and gender and sexuality studies.
