Then and Now: Observations on Aging from a 19th-Century Physician
Please join Clements Library Assistant Curator of Manuscript, Jayne Ptolemy as she hosts an interactive discussion focused on aging. The conversation will focus on a remarkable historical document in the Clements collection written by a 19th-century physician, Vine Utley. His notebook, entitled “Observations on Old People 80 Years of Age,” details the interviews he conducted with the aging population of New London County, Connecticut, between 1809 and 1827. His notes give detailed glimpses into the biographies, habits, and health of octogenarians in the early 19th century. We will share our reactions and reflect together on what this document shows us about aging in the past as well as the present. A typed transcript will be shared upon registration.
