Music In Detroit and Michigan: The Legend Continues: Day Pass 3/10- Detroit's Lost Soul: The Story of Detroit's Legendary Songwriting Team -Holland - Dozier - Holland, their Invictus and Hot Wax record labels, and Detroit's erased musical legacy.
*PROGRAM CHANGE* Between 1968-1971, Motown ceased operating in Detroit and relocated their operations to the West coast. Still, music continued to be made in the city by a variety of artists, including the songwriting trio Holland-Dozier-Holland for their newly formed record labels. Their music was as brilliant and powerful as any they made for Motown but this substantial chapter in their work has been written out of narratives about cultural and musical histories. This is a fascinating, behind the scenes story that highlights the relationship between music, corporate greed, evolving music business models, organized crime, politics, white flight, socio-demographics and so much more. Christian Matijas-Mecca is Chair of the Department of Dance and a Professor of Dance and Music at the University of Michigan. Christian joined the UM in 1998 after serving for several years on the faculty at Interlochen Arts Academy. A leading researcher and pianist in dance and music studies, Christian has served as musical repetiteur in the staging of dances by Balanchine, Graham, Weidman, Taylor, Dean, and Lubovitch, and has accompanied for directors and artists from dance companies including the New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and others. Christian has composed works for dance that include a commissioned score for the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Existence Without Form (2006). He is the author of The Words and Music of Brian Wilson (Praeger, 2017), and Listen to Psychedelic Rock: Exploring a Musical Genre (Greenwood, 2020), and between 2000-2009 he released six CDs, from which four are largely dedicated to original compositions.
