Music In Detroit and Michigan: The Legend Continues: Day Pass 3/24- Music of Arab America
The music of Arab American communities over the last 100-plus years shows a constant navigation of tradition and innovation. The first half of this
presentation introduces some of the core elements of Arab music with examples and demonstrations before moving to an overview of how these musical ideas
evoke both memory and novelty. The musical history shows creativity and adaptation alongside the assertion of a communal identity, forces that can be in
tension, especially as musicians target larger audiences.
Christopher Witulski is an assistant teaching professor of ethnomusicology at Bowling Green State University. He is the author of two books on music and
religion in Morocco (The Gnawa Lions, Indiana University Press and Focus: Music and Religion of Morocco, Routledge Press) and teaches on topics related to
Arab music. His recent work is building a collaborative project exploring music within Arab America.
This lecture is sponsored by Linda Grekin and is dedicated to all those adults and children who sing, play an instrument and/or support musicians. Music
