Up-close Look at Arab and Muslim Americans, AnAmerican Muslims and Arab Americans are often projected negatively in mainstream media. Newspapers use key words such as extremists, terrorists and fanatics to describe Arabs. The present day Arab stereo¬type parallels the image of Jews in pre-Nazi Germany, where Jews were painted as dark, shifty-eyed, venal and threateningly different people. These representations of Arab and Muslim Americans have created a general mistrust and dislike among Americans. Who are Muslim and Arab-Americans? Why are they portrayed negatively? Who benefits from these phenomena? This class will help answer these and many other questions.
