DLS - The Vanishing American Corporation: Navigating the Hazards of a New Economy
Professor Davis is the author of a recent book, “The Vanishing American Corporation: Navigating the Hazards of a New Economy.” Time Magazine (May 23, 2016) article “On Saving Capitalism” mentioned him as one of the pre-eminent scholars on financializations of the American corporations. His research is broadly concerned with corporate governance, finance and society, and new forms of organizations. His recent writings question whether there are viable organizational alternatives to shareholder-owned corporations in the United States. Corporations seem to be eternal parts of the economic landscape, yet the number of United States companies listed on the stock exchange dropped by more than half between 1997 and 2012. Some have gone bankrupt (GM, Chrysler, Eastman Kodak). Others have disappeared entirely (Lehman Brothers, Bethlehem Steel, Borders, Circuit City). The decline in public corporations is one of the root causes of income inequality and social instability. Thriving corporations were once an integral part of building a middle class. They offered millions of people lifetime employment, stable career paths, health insurance, and pensions. The businesses that are replacing them are not the same. The combined global workforces of prominent technology companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Yelp, Zillow, Zynga, Tableau, and Box are smaller than the number of people who lost their jobs when Circuit City was liquidated in 2009. The sharing economy appears to absolve many companies from having a sense of obligation to their employees. What comes next? The future could see either increasing economic polarization, as careers turn to jobs and jobs turn to tasks, or a more democratic economy built from grass roots. The speaker says it is up to us.
