Dr. Mial earned a bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan. She taught English, Journalism and Speech Communication before serving as Assistant Principal at Ann Arbor Huron High School, 1974-1986, and Principal from 1986-1994. After retirement she consulted with the North Central Association and the James Comer School Improvement program. She has served in leadership positions at the African American Culural Historical Museum, SOS Community Services and is a member of Bethel AME Church.
Carla O’Connor, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Professor of Education at the University of Michigan, is the Director of University of Michigan Wolverine Pathways, a free year-round program that partners with the families, schools, and communities of Detroit, Ypsilanti, and Southfield to support academic success, college admission, and career exploration. She received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Education from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in English from Wesleyan University. A sociologist of education, Carla O’Connor has expertise in the areas of African American achievement, cultural studies, urban education, and ethnographic methods.
